How do I set up or update my audio settings?

Tips for ensuring your audio input and output are at optimal level.

Headphones

When in Katmai, you can use headphones or your computer speakers. Wired headphones are preferred because they allow you to experience the full range of spatial audio. What’s spatial audio? If there’s a coworker speaking on your left, you will hear them more prominently through your left headphone, mimicking real life, so you know where to look for them. As you move away from that co-worker, they will gradually become more difficult to hear. This allows for more privacy and for a more realistic interaction.

Note: If you are using Bluetooth headphones, recommend that you connect your headphones before entering Katmai. Changing Bluetooth settings while in your space can cause audio errors. Additionally, most Bluetooth headphones cannot experience spatial audio so a wired headphone experience will be better for most users.

Speakers

While spatial audio is not as appreciable when using speakers, speakers are still a viable option. They transmit sound effectively and don’t mess up your hair.

Note: If you’re experiencing echoes, check your Katmai audio settings by checking your Settings (click on the cog icon located on your self-view in the upper right corner). Make sure the toggle next to Audio Out is toggled to the type of audio you’re using. Additionally, if you are presenting or sharing your screen, make sure you mute your audio ("Mute Site") from the tab you are sharing so you don't cause an echo.

Inputs and outputs

If your computer has multiple audio input options, these will be available for selection in the Audio In dropdown menu that appears when you click the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen. If you find you are experiencing any audio issues, always check back to make sure the right option is selected.
