Before You Troubleshoot: Try These Quick Fixes

Before diving into specific settings, make sure you have covered the basics:

  1. Use Google Chrome: Google Chrome is Katmai’s preferred browser. If you aren’t using it already, try switching to Chrome.

  2. Update Your Browser: If you’re already on Chrome, check for available browser updates. See: How to Check and Update Your Browser for instructions.

  3. Refresh Your Window: Sometimes all you need is a quick reset. Refresh your browser window to reload your connection to the space.

Others Can't Hear You (Microphone Issues)

If you are speaking but no one can hear you, your browser or computer is likely blocking your microphone.

  1. Check Browser Permissions: Click the Lock Icon 🔒 in your browser's address bar and ensure the Microphone toggle is turned On. Refresh the page to apply changes.

  2. Close Conflicting Apps: Video conferencing apps can monopolize audio on some machines, so if you are using Zoom or Teams, for example, try closing out of those.

  3. Verify Katmai Settings: Click the Settings gear icon on your self-view, go to Audio, and ensure the correct microphone is selected from the dropdown.

  4. Verify Your Computer's Settings: Check your internal system preferences to make sure the audio settings are correct.

You Can't Hear Others (Speaker Issues)

If you can see people talking but hear no sound, your audio is likely routing to the wrong place or being muted.

  1. Check for a Muted Tab: Right-click the Katmai tab at the top of your browser. If you see "Unmute Site," click it. You can also look for a speaker icon with a line through it in your address bar.

  2. Verify Output Settings: Verify your Katmai audio output settings by clicking the settings cog under your self-view in the top right of your screen. Select/re-select the correct output. Click Test to confirm they are working.

  3. Verify Your Computer's Settings: Check your internal system preferences to make sure the audio settings are correct.

Echo or Feedback Loops

Echo occurs when your microphone picks up the audio coming out of your speakers and feeds it back into the room.

  • Wear Headphones: This is the easiest way to immediately stop an echo.

  • Check Your Output Selection: Open your Katmai Settings > Audio and ensure your output device is set to match what you are actually using (e.g., don't have "Speakers" selected if you are wearing "Headphones").

  • Mute Shared Videos: If you hear a severe echo while sharing your screen or a video, right-click the specific browser tab you are sharing and select Mute Site. This prevents Katmai from playing the video's audio twice.

Choppy or Robotic Audio Quality

If voices sound robotic, cut out, or lag, you are likely experiencing a network connection issue.

  1. Switch to Ethernet: If you have slow internet speed on Wi-Fi, switch to ethernet or to a different network, if possible. Make sure to turn your Wi-Fi off once plugged in.

  2. Check Your Speeds: We generally recommend a download speed of 100 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps or higher.

  3. Close Bandwidth-Heavy Apps: Pause any large downloads or streaming services running in the background.
